Waste Management

Waste Management Sectors

Waste sectors we cover

We have experience working with many business sectors. Most of the following sectors will need an Environmental Permit, Environmental Management system, risk assessment, Accident and emergency plan and Fire Prevention Plan.
  • List of services

Depending on your location, you may also need other surveys and specific management plans, such as dust management plans:

    • Waste Transfer Stations (WTSs).

    • Material Recycling Facilities (MRFs).

    • Metal Recycling Facilities and Scrap Yards

    • End of Life Vehicle Sites (ELVs)

    • Wood Recycling

    • Aggregate Recycling and soil recycling

    • Plastic Recycling

    • Composting Sites: In-vessel and open air windrow

    • Anaerobic Digestion Facilities

    • Biomass plants, energy from waste and  Combined Heat and Power Plant (CHPs)

    • Use of wastes in construction projects

    • Discharge to watercourse

You will be subject to regulation by the Environment Agency and / or local authority and should they have cause for concern the Health and Safety executive. Severn Compliance can help with applications for Environmental Permits and other management plans you may need. We can also help with ongoing regulatory action and environmental improvements at your site.

We can also help with complex waste management and site issues such as End of waste positions, sourcing outlets for wastes, investigating neighbourhood complaints and amenity issues and more.

Waste Transfer Stations (WTSs) and Material Recycling Facilities (MRFs)

Forming the majority of permitted waste sites Waste Transfer Stations Material Recycling Facilities often pose some of the more complex compliance issues. The potential for noise, dust, pest, odours and an increasing fire risk makes these potentially environmentally high risk sites and as a result heavily regulated.

In addition the need for a Technically Competent Manager (CoTC), Environment Management System (EMS), Duty of Care and Waste Returns all add to potential compliance issues.

Severn Compliance can help you ensure you permit is up to date, deal with any amenity’s issues and ensure you EMS reflects your operation whilst making it realistic for you to operate to.

Metal Recycling Facilities and End of Life Vehicle Sites (ELVs)

Metal Recycling Facilities or scrap yards, call them what you want, but the majority of these sites require an environmental permit. With potentially serious environmental impacts such noise, oily sites run-off and the potential for large fires these sites can have numerous compliance issues.

Severn Compliance can either help you gain the relevant environmental permit or manage your sites in a compliant manner through help with an EMS, or pollution prevention. We can even help register you as a Licence Scrap Dealer. We can also create you an Fire Prevention Plan

We can also help end of life vehicle sites become an Authorised Treatment Facility enabling them to notify the DVLA directly that a vehicle has been scrapped.

Wood Recycling

Due to the increasing demand for both biomass and recycled wood for panel board production wood recycling sites are increasing in popularity.

Severn Compliance can help you gain the correct permit for this recycling activity, whilst ensuing you have identified and can manage all of the major environmental risks including noise, dust and Fire. We can create a Fire Prevention Plan (FPP) and dust and noise management plans

We can also help you classify your waste wood and create a waste wood acceptance and production process documents which are increasingly required by the Environment Agency.

Aggregate and Soil Recycling

The use of recycled aggregates in both construction and road building projects is increasing and so is the need to avoid sending soils to landfill. The re-use of these materials requires the waste to be treated by screening, crushing or washing all of which require an environmental permit. These activities can also give rise to noise and dust issues.

Severn Compliance can help you gain the relevant environmental permit foe these activities, whilst putting in place dust and noise management plans. Recycled aggregates and soil are still classed as waste unless a recognised product state is achieved we can guide you through the steps to achieve an end of waste status.

Use of Wastes in Construction Projects

Reusing soils and aggregates is both sustainable and economical, however both can be classed as a waste meaning environmental compliance must be met to treat or re-sue them. This may relate to the producer of these materials, the company recycling the material, the haulier and the end user.

We work with recycling and construction companies to ensure the waste and materials they produce are classified and used correctly on the sites they are used. We can also help you manage your Duty of Care for a project.

Plastic Recycling

Due to the increasing demand for recycled products and the increase in the circular economy plastic recycling is continuing to increase, however to produce a good quality product requires a number of different treatment methods such as washing, granulating and heat treatment. Many plastic recycling facilities have operated under waste exemptions, however this can be limiting in terms of tonnages and there is also the large risk of a fire at these facilities.

Severn Compliance can help you understand if your operation can legally operate under a waste exemption and if not help you move to an Environmental Permit, by managing the application and also creating a Fire Prevention Plan.

Biomass, Energy From Waste and Combined Heat and Power Plant (CHPs)

Severn Compliance have experience of permitting both small scale energy from waste plants and on-farm Combined Heat and Power (CHP’s). Ensuring the correct waste types are on your environmental permit and that you can legally burn the wastes you wish to.

Dealing with both the Environment Agency and Local Authorities Severn Compliance can apply for Small Waste Incineration Plant (SWIP) Environmental Permits and vary existing permits to accommodate new waste to energy plants.

Anaerobic Digestion Facilities

The increase in Anaerobic Digestion as a source of green energy and a way producing organic fertiliser has been no more than in Shropshire where Severn Compliance are based. With the potential for noise and odour companies combined with the risk of pollution to water courses and ground water ensuring your operation is both low risk and compliant is essential.

Severn Compliance can apply for Anaerobic Digestion permits for both on-farm and commercial food waste operations. We can help you save time and money by identifying if your proposed operation will be able to gain an environmental permit along with using experts to manage any identified risks.

Composting Sites: In-vessel and open air windrow

With the demand for higher local authority recycling rates there is a continued need for composting facilities. Composting operations can give rise to a number of environmental risks including, dust, noise, fire, run-off and bio-aerosols.

Severn Compliance can help you manage these risks to a level that prevents environmental damage and amenity issues. We can also help you gain a new environmental permit or vary existing permits.

Discharge to Watercourse

Many businesses and individuals have a need to discharge water to a watercourse. This activity requires permission from the Environment Agency in the form of an environmental permit.

Severn Compliance can help you understand if a permit is require, what infrastructure is required and apply for the permit. We can then help you maintain compliance for the activity once your permit is issued.
